Founded in 1966, El Futuro Credit Union is located in City of Porterville in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. It was originally founded by immigrant Hispanic farm workers in response to the failure of local financial institutions to provide them financial services. An initial collection of $38.00 has now grown to over 7 million dollars in assets and 3200 members. These assets represent the labor and hopes of the working poor that have come together to improve their daily lives. It represents their aspirations for economic justice.

We are authorized by the State of California to provide services to all persons that live, work or practice their faith within the greater Porterville area. From the onset, the credit union has been committed to meeting the financial needs of low income communities. We provide our members a full spectrum of financial services, always based on reasonable rates and flexible terms. The cost to our members are typically less than half that charged by traditional financial institutions, yet we consistently provide our members a high quality of service.

Our mission is to improve the financial well-being of our members, and to create economic opportunity for low income residents. Such opportunities include providing access to financial services, loans, financial education and the opportunity to build assets.

El Futuro is certified as a community development credit union and became certified as a CDFI at the State and Federal level during 2006. We are one of only two credit unions with this certification in the San Joaquin Valley. As the oldest Latino credit union in the nation, we have consistently assured that all our banking services remain sensitive to the cultural and linguistic needs of our members.

Our credit union is a family based organization. Our membership includes multiple members of families that have now crossed generations. We have maintained their support because of our commitment to make financial services available to all residents of the community, but in particular, to those that have traditionally been beyond the reach of established financial institutions.
